ten472 is a contemporary art space with two locations in Northern California. The main exhibition space is located in Grass Valley and occupies the second floor of a restored 1940's building in the downtown area. The gallery features a large, light-filled open space with dramatic 20 foot ceilings.

In San Francisco, our satellite project space is located in the former Hamm's Brewery building in the city's Mission District and is distinguished by the 8 story high former grain elevator and sculpture garden.

Our focus is on representing a very limited number of core artists, both emerging and established. This focus allows us to dedicate our efforts on expanding their profiles by actively participating in national art fairs, by featuring rotating exhibitions and by providing private and corporate art consulting services and public art placement.

The artists work across a diverse spectrum of genres; from abstraction to realism, conceptually oriented work to kinetic folk, and from intimate sized sculpture to large-scale public works. The common link is our unique relationship with each artist and their dedication to making work that is compelling in composition, technique and materials.

LOCATION:

Located 2 hours east of San Francisco, and en-route to Lake Tahoe, the Grass Valley/Nevada City area has always attracted a creative community. It is home to more artists per capita than anywhere else in California and many prominent artists with international reputations reside in the area. The close proximity to San Francisco and Lake Tahoe have made it a desirable retreat offering an excellent quality of life with cultural events, outdoor activities, fine dining, wine tasting, etc.

The area is home to many prominent cultural establishments including the Center for the Arts, the FOR-SITE Foundation, numerous regional theatre groups, the Wild and Scenic Film Festival, and Music in the Mountains.

Theodore Gall has been working with metal since his early days as an artist. His compelling sculptures are most often placed in thought provoking situations, presenting familiar images in unexpected combinations and contexts.His apt insight into the human condition and wry observations of political trends are at the core of his creativity. Gall's works are inventively interactive with components that allow the figure to change stance or suggest motion. Additionally, his series of bronze heads are uniquely articulated with layers that literally open to reveal new elements and insights, and expand on the theme of the piece. The sculptures encourage peeling back layers to reveal hidden truths, hypocrisies, and primal instincts. Through masks or hinged layers his work explores humanity's multiple personas and evolutionary opportunities.Theodore Gall studied at both the Art institute of Chicago and the American Academy of Art, and has served as a consultant to the Art Institute as well as the Illinois Arts Council. His work is included in many notable public and private collections, including President Jimmy Carter, Walt Disney Corporation, McDonald's Corporation, The IIlinois State Museum, and Standard Oil, among others. He lives and works in Southern California.

Scott Gruss

SCOTT GRUSS

Works in photo and mixed media concept projects

Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Gruss currently lives and works in Chicago, Illinois. He conducted formal studies in photographic science and design, with a concentration in large format photography, silver printing and 3-dimensional design. Exploring ideas and materials has been a large part of the process of his work, and he considers himself mainly self-educated. "The work is not to be owned or defined by the reality of the material I am working with. The process lets go of literal understandings of materials and placement use; which in turn metamorphoses into something else. The process enters a geoemetric space of the mind, where dimensions can be abstracted". Gruss spends staggering amounts of time and concentration on aspects of his work and takes an almost shamanic approach regarding the nature of his creativity. Working in a variety of mediums and methods including painting, drawing and photography with the use of graphite, ink wax, epoxy, string and ash, Gruss' installations focus mostly with the fundamental elements of black and white linear exploration and expression.Gruss' work is archived in the Hallmark Corporate Fine Art Collection, Kansas City, MO, and has been exhibited at the Evanston Art Center Biennial, Evanston, IL, Artropolis 2007, Chicago, Il, Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago, Il, and the Art Institute of Chicago g2 space, among others.

Metal Wall Pieces Bronze Sculpture

Elisabett Gudmann is a Northern California based artist focused on creating works infused with color, texture, and form. She is widely recognized for her metal wall pieces, which balance between painting and sculpture, and she is also an accomplished sculptor.METAL WALL PIECES:The complex and physically demanding process involves laboriously etching the metal to create detailed surface textures and imagery in relief. Unique and intricate patinas are applied, layering rich and translucent colors with reflective depth. The imagery evolves through layered complexity and evoke references to both natural and man-made environments, often incorporating remnants or random text. The patinas have the aged translucent and earthy feeling of something that has been worn down over time, yet are meticulously beautiful. Gudmann's use of materials and combination of improvisation and contgrol of the patina process continues to broaden the definition of contemporary "painting".BRONZE SCULPTURE:In direct contrast to Gudmann's refined wall pieces, her bronze sculptures are distinguished by their broken and aged surfaces, rough textures and exaggerated features. The contrasting textures and wrapped details are reminiscent of artifacts that have an apparent history but encourage the viewer to fill in the details. The figurative and equined themed pieces are produced in cast bronze and are often made in collaboration with her partner, Kirk H. Slaughter.

Born 1928, Pasadena, CA Died December, 17, 2003, Sonoma County, CA

Wally Hedrick was kind of a backyard Beat inventor, to paraphrase Thomas Albright's description of him in "Art in the San Francisco Bay Area: 1945-1980". During the 1950's he was one of the founding members of the historical Six Gallery (location of Allen Ginsburgs first public reading of the Howl), and his Filmore Street home, where he lived with artist Jay DeFeo, became a creative center for other painters, poets, filmmakers and musicians.In the late 1940's, Hedrick was experimenting with light, and during the 1950's -1970's his paintings and assemblages shifted from neo-cubism to metaphysics to political subjects painted in a cartoonish style and dealing particularly with the escalation of the Vietnam War. In 1959 Hedrick was included in the seminal exhibition 16 Americans at the Museum of Modern art in New York, and at age 27 a solo exhibition of his work was featured at the MH DeYoung Museum in San Francisco.Hedrick was the recipient of many prestigious awards and grants, including the National Endowment for the Arts, The Adolph & Esther Gottlieb Foundation and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. His works are included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the MH DeYoung Museum, among others.

With little preconception of image, color or technique, Herschleb sits at her drawing table with pencil in hand, summoning up a feeling to accompany an image to paint. She's come to believe that her motivation and inspiration comes from the National Geographic magazines that captivated her as a child. She sat amazed by the photographs of what was beyond her small world; insects the color of eggs at Easter, men painted in ceremonial delight, even plants that seemd to be from another planet.From a family of artists, Herschlebs talents were nurtured from an early age. She is a lifelong resident of the San Francisco bay area and studied at the College of Marin, Kentfield, and CCAC, Oakland.

THE ANALYSIS PAINTINGSAfter stretching the boundaries of figurative depiction, and exploring all of its inherent possibilities in previous works, the artist has recently arrived at this new series. Calling them a series however, is less accurate than considering them a distinctive theme, period, or station in Koranyi's development as an artist. These paintings seem akin to one another based on form, but they occupy a much broader space in terms of their subject matter.The analysis theme is the continuation of previous figurative studies and paintings by Koranyi. These works convey the mood of a particular situation at that time. The dense nervous system of lines was an accurate depiction of the internal emotional landscape, while the figures' more rigid posture and movements revealed a condition which is usually observed from the outside looking in. It is the furthering of these figurative deptictions through the enlightenment of the figures, and the illumination of their inner structures. The viewer is now able to see and empathize with these fascinating, warm and engaging figures simultaneously from various planes, vantage points and emotional fields.These new works are striving for complexity and their stature is two-fold; on one hand, the strong contours and overlapping structure of lines in the paintings embody his vast repertoire of printmaking techniques; on the other hand, the elegant deep palette, refined tones and color, and the complex play of brush strokes, all utilize the classic elements of the art of painting. The figures are sometimes calm and loving, others are in a state of anxiety - especially the ones that appear alone - at other times they attempt to exorcize the demons within. The positive lines (dark) and the negative lines (light) as well as the over lapping contours, give occasion to unravel the subjects dual personality, or to expose its other Id. The overlapping planes, and the imagery superimposed upon them express an element of time, as well. At the same time, these entangled - sometimes seemingly forever entwined system of lines - express the delicate and complex threads of the circle of life.Koranyi's works are included in the Hungarian National Gallery, the Hermann Otto museum, the Mihaly Museum and the Janos Museum in Hungary, and are included in many public and private collections throughout the world.

Gino Miles

GINO MILES

Sculpture

The sculpture of Gino Miles combines, in a contemporary context, his love and energy for both objects found in nature and classical sculpture. The balance of a piece in relationship to its spatial position is a crtitical component of his work, often creating a tension between space and sculpture. Frequently incorporating the use of negative space gives a continous sense of movement and endows a single form with clarity and rigor, whle at the same time conveying the complexity and expressiveness of classical modernist sculpture. Primarily working with fabricated bronze and stainless steel, each piece is unique unto itself; no two are identical.Miles currently lives and works in Santa Fe, NM. He earned his MFA from the University of Northern Colorado and conducted additional studies at the Universita per i Stranierie, Perugia, Italy, and the Academia di Belle Arti, Firenze, Italy.His large scale works are prominently featured in many permanent and private collections throughout the world, including Disney Corporate Headquarters, the cities of Cerritos and Napa, CA, the City of Edmond, OK, and Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, KY, among others.

Sculpture

Drawing upon his heritage and contemporary surroudings, Rivera incorporates skeletons, crosses, and other significant symbols along with moving parts into his unique sculpture. All of his pieces are creatively interactive, and invite viewer participation. Whether it's the rolling wheels of a skeleton's bike or the crank handle that manipulate two skeletons atop a bed, the sculptures illustrate a serious side along with a sly sense of humor, that are Rivera's personality.In his most recent body of kinetic folk sculpture, Rivera continues his exploration of the Dia de los Muertos. Born and raised in Santa Fe, NM, Rivera draws upon the creative energy that exists in the community and surrounding landscape.

CHRIS ROM & GEOFF BUDDIE

Chris Rom and Geoff Buddie are a married couple who work together to create objects reflecting their shared aesthetic. The narrative and often playful pieces are made from a diverse variety of materials including stoneware and porcelain, handfelted wool, recycled rubber, encaustic paint, wood, metals and found objects. Their collaborative process begins at the initital conceptual stage and continues through the actual creation and execution of the work.Quite a few of their pieces are created solely for the purpose of interaction. Many of the parts are intended to be moved and exchanged for others, and, in doing so, they have provided a format that invites the viewer to contribute their own reponses and perceptions to the piece. They hope that in making work that offers a tactile experience and is visually engaging, they will provide the viewer the opportunity to free their imaginations of adult inhibitions and investigate the way a child does - with curiosity and wonder.Both Chris Rom and Geoff Buddie earned their BFA's from Bowling Green State University, They live and work in Ohio.

Sculpture

A multi-faceted artist, Slaughter is best kown for his bronze sculpture. Ranging in scale from intimate sized to large public works, he combines elements of classical sculpture with his modern aesthetic, resulting in a body of work that is captivating.The mostly equine and figurative themed pieces evoke the primitive and timeless with their broken and aged surfaces, patina finishes and abstracted forms. The sculptures are distinguished by their exaggerated features, rough textural surfaces, and wrapped effects. Coupled with unique patinas, these sculptures take on masterful strength and balletic elegance. The contrasting textures and wrapped details are reminiscent of ancient artifacts that have an apparent history but encourage the viewer to fill in the details. Although utilizing a multitude of original sculpting materials - from concrete and steel to found objects and sculpting wax - the final sculpture is ultimately realized in bronze, and are often made in collaboration with his partner, Elisabett Gudmann. A California resident, Slaughter conducted formal studies at the Herron School of Art, Indianapolis, IN, and the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS. His work is featured in private and public collections around the world, including the Taylor Art Museum and the City of La Quinta, CA.

ARTIST STATEMENT

STATEMENT

ELISABETT GUDMANN

I love being in the studio. It's where I'm the most comfortable, alone with my thoughts, listening to music, NPR, talk radio, singing out loud: Translating my ideas into visual expression.

Much of my inspiration comes from the medium itself. I'm drawn to the inherent beauty and unique qualities of the metal and work directly with it. Most of my work is conceptual in nature and created within a formal panel structure. Multiple panels and varying panel depths are often used, giving the works additional presence and dimensionality.

The imagery I create evolves through layered complexity; a very time consuming and often chaotic and messy process of working with the patinas to create textures and patterns on the metal, often employing a reductive technique. I strive to evoke emotional charges through the interplay of color, texture, marks, and form; to compose images that balance between the abstract and the recognizable.
